A1 is the best option for those who want to ride on smaller motorcycles. You can ride with no L plates, take the pillion of passengers and even use motorways.

CBT
It is important to understand how the A1 or A2 licensing process works. First, you'll need complete an CBT (compulsory basic training). This is a single-day course that gives you basic training in motorcycle riding. The course also covers topics like road safety and highway code. After you've completed the CBT, you'll need to pass a theory and practical test.
The theory test is comprised of multiple-choice tests, while the test in practice is a ride-through with several moves. Each maneuver has to be executed with precision. If you're unable to do this, you'll fail your test. If you fail the practical or theory tests the license will be suspended.
After having passed both the theory and practical test and passing both tests, you will be able to apply for an A1 license. The A1 licence permits you to ride any motorcycle up to 125cc, and you can also use it to carry a passenger or drive on motorways. In addition, the A1 licence permits you to upgrade to a Category A licence when you are 24 or older.
The A2 licence is intended for riders aged 19 and older who want to move up from their 125cc motorbike. After you have completed the A2 licence, you are able to ride any motorcycle with the power output of up to 47bhp. You must first finish two years of your A2 license before you can apply for the direct access scheme to obtain a full A license. This was previously possible for those aged 21 or older, but you now need to be at least 24 to qualify for direct access.
Theory Test
If you're planning to take a motorcycle ride then you'll have to pass the test of theory first. It can be done prior to or after completing the compulsory basic training (CBT). You can invest in books and software to prepare for the theory test. When you take your test for the theory you'll have 57 mins to answer 50 questions. You'll also be asked to identify road signs and hazards. It is recommended to arrive at the centre at least 15 minutes early, as you might not be permitted to take your test if you're not on time.
You'll receive an official motorcycle licence if pass the theory test. If you don't succeed you'll be able to resit the test after three working days. You can book your theory test online, or by calling DVSA. When you arrive at the test centre, you'll be required to present your Buy Northern Ireland Driving Licence licence or other form of identification. Also, you'll need your helmet and gloves.
After passing the exam in the theory section, it's time to begin preparing for the practical test. You can find a list of approved training centers on the DVSA website. YouTube has a video that you can use to practice. You'll have to pass the theoretical test and two-stage practical bike tests before you can move on to a full A license.
After successfully passing the CBT and the two-stage test, you can apply for an A1 license at age 17. The A1 licence allows you to ride motorcycles with up to 11kW or 125cc, but not on motorways. When you turn 19, you are able to upgrade to the A2 licence which allows you to ride bikes with a maximum power of 35kW and carries passengers. You can move on to a full-A licence through an access course that is progressive and completing the category A theory and module 1+2 practical tests on your own full-power bike.
Training

You can ride any motorcycle with a maximum power of 125ccs and be able to carry a passenger if have an A1 licence. Practical Test
You will need to pass a motorcycle test before you can get on the road. The test is divided into two parts: an offroad portion that lasts for about 20 minutes, and includes moving your bike and parking, and an on-road section that tests your ability to drive. The two sections don't have to be taken simultaneously. The motorcycle theory test is slightly different from the car theory test. The test consists of fifteen multiple-choice answers and fourteen video clips. It's not as difficult as you think especially if you already have already obtained a driving license. There's also a hazard perception test, which is similar to the car version but with questions more specific to riding on a motorcycle. You can take the tests again if you fail either one.
